Explorer Program
Explorer Post: The District sponsors Explorer Scout Post 1003, which provides young men and women, ages 15 to 18, an opportunity to learn about the fire service. Participating under the direct supervision of fire and EMS advisers, they get to experience life in the fire and emergency medical service. In the classroom and out in the field, Explorer Scouts learn the operations of the District, how to respond in emergencies, and other particulars of firefighting and emergency medical services. Personal safety is heavily stressed in all situations Explorers participate in. Explorers also develop teamwork while simultaneously building their leadership skills.
Explorer Post members can become eligible for additional training opportunities, including ride-alongs with the on-duty crews, call outs to specific incidents, and a study program with the school district. When they reach age 18, many Explorers apply to become District volunteers. Several of the District’s current career Firefighter/EMTs and Firefighter/Paramedics began their fire service journey as Explorers.
Individuals interested in the Explorer Post must submit a Volunteer Interest Application and participate in an interview process. Eligible applicants must:
- be currently attending school or GED classes;
- maintain a minimum GPA as set by the post;
- have above-average attendance at school.
Uniforms are provided by the Fire District.
The number of participants in the post at any one time may be limited.
Applications are available at the Station 34 at 323 N 5th Avenue in Sequim
